Fenn Kayaks has announced it will be sponsoring "Fenn hotspots" for a select group of international surfski races. The Fenn hotspots will create a race within a race. This first paddler (regardless of the manufacturer of his/her surfski) to reach a Fenn hotspot will be awarded the Fenn Hotspot prize money. This prize money will be in addition to the prize money awarded based of the final finishing places.

The tides on race day have forced some changes to be made to the long course that was used in 2006. The 2006 race was held with a sight ebbing (outgoing) tide. Racers using GPS units were reporting faster times going out Golden Gate (against the wind and waves) then they did on the surfing run coming home.

For 2007, we have a strong flooding (incoming) tide. The tide charts predict the current will peak at 3.2 knots at 12:39 pm. If the 2006 course would be used again, the racers would be forced to go against the incoming tidal current, the incoming waves, and headwind all at the same time. While this would have an affect on all paddlers, it could bring to a near standstill those paddlers in the latter half of the pack. The 2007 course will take the paddlers along the northern shore of the Golden Gate, which will shelter them from the strongest current in the middle of the channel. This course shares major parts of 2004 and 2005 races courses. These years also had flood tides.

All racers should be advised that the course is subject to change based on the conditions of the day.

First Race in Surfski.Info 2007-2008 World Rankings
Live Race Day Coverage

Some exciting things are in the works for the 2007 US Surfski Championships. The US Champs will be the first race in the 2007-2008 Surfski.Info World Rankings. The six-race Surfski.Info World Rankings are recognized by many as the World Series of surfski racing. As such, most of the world's best surfski racers will be lined up at the starting line at San Francisco's Crissy Field on September 29. Stay tuned for additional updates with lists of those who have committed to attend the US Champs.

With the international interest that the US Champs has generated, we want to be able to let everyone around the world follow the race as it progresses. To make this happen, we are partnering with Surfski.Info to provide live race day coverage on the Internet. The first ever live Internet coverage of a surfski race was implemented by Surfski.Info at this year's Molokai race. It turned out to be a huge success. With very little pre-race publicity for the live Molokai coverage, Surfski.Info had 10,000 page views during the race.

Here's how it will work for the US Surfski Championships. We'll have our media coordinators on the water in escort boats during the race. They will be in phone communication with Surfski.Info's Rob Mousley in South Africa. As Rob gets the verbal play by play, he will be typing away as fast as possible and uploading the play by play action (or should we say wave by wave action) to Surfski.Info. Those following the Surfski.Info coverage will know more about the race than those waiting at the finish line.
